1Good concept, Poor execution....you get what you pay for  Nov 06, 2009
I am a bargain shopper through and through. I am always looking for the best quality for the lowest price; So I was delighted to find that this cheap easel had so many positive reviews. Though I am somewhat skeptical of the quality of Melissa and Doug's products (I have had bad experiences with their quality in the past...) I decided to buy it anyways because of all the good reviews. Unfortunately, I wish I had gone with my gut instinct. I bought this easel for my grandkids to use when they visit me, but after the first go with the grandkids I had buyer's remorse. I will say that it was relatively easy to put together....something the older kids would probably have been able to do by themselves. But the quality all around was rather shoddy. The wood is lightweight and some of the screw holes seemed just slightly out of place like the wood had warped a little. The plastic trays were pretty thin compared to other easels I have used in the past. (I am a part-time art docent.) Regardless of the quality of the components though, I was determined to make sure my grandkids had a good time doing art.... But that only lead to more disappointments. The chalkboard doesn't seemed to be made out of the same material that normal chalkboards are made out of. I'm guessing it was replaced with a cheaper chalkboard alternative. I say this because both normal chalk and sidewalk chalk would not write on the board...they would only mark partially (kind of like a pen that is about to run out of ink). We did however get chalk markers to work on the chalkboard. But both the marks from the normal chalk and the marker chalk was very difficult to remove. The whiteboard offered little more in the function department. The dry erase markers had a difficult time wiping off if the drawings stayed on the board for longer than about 15 minutes...all of the markings left colorful little ghost lines even after they were erased. After a frustrating afternoon of trying to find writing devices that were compatible with the chalkboard and whiteboard, we decided the best use for this easel was just clip pieces of paper on either side so the grandkids could draw and paint.
In the end I wound up donating this easel to a local preschool and buying different one. The new one was a bit more expensive, but the quality of the new easel is light years ahead of the Melissa and Doug easel.

5Fun Easel  Nov 05, 2009
Gave to my 3 year old son for bday. He loves the chalkboard and dry erase board and plays with it everyday. Almost takes the place of him drawing on the walls, but it's a great outlet for any color crazy child! I didn't realize it didn't come with any supplies, so buyer beware that you will need to purchase the paper roll and accessories separately. Also doesn't fold, so be prepared for it to take up space. Definitely recommend this fun easel.

5Melissa & Doug easel  Nov 04, 2009
I purchased this for my niece at 4 years old. She is now 6 and the easel has never been put away. She LOVES it! Very sturdy and child friendly. You do have to "Prime" the chalk board for the folks that were having trouble with it. It is in the instructions.
For all of the electronic educational gifts I have purchased for her, THIS is the only gift that I still see her play with. She has not outgrown it in 2 years and don't see her giving it up anytime soon!
I think this is a great gift for any Kid!

1The Worst Gift I Ever Bought  Nov 02, 2009
I bought this set believing that this would be great for my son who loves to draw, paint, etc. It took a a bit for it to arrive (came 2 days before Christmas even though I ordered a few days after Thanksgiving) and all seemed well. The night before Christmas, I begin the awful task of putting it together. To say that it did not go well...is an understatement. The package did not have the proper side adjustments so the easel can not stand on its own. He use to lean it on the wall but that became an accident waiting to happen since he couldn't press too hard or make any sudden movements without it falling straight to the floor. The adjustments were made designed for a much smaller set. When I attempted to put the roll of paper on the top, the pole was too long so it does not sit on the top like any normal easel...it rolls forward off the entire set another accident. I called them the day after Christmas and the company states that I would have to take it apart repackage it, pay for shipping and give a full explanation as to why I wanted to return it and then I MIGHT get a refund or an exchange. Further, she asks why I didn't put it together as soon as I got it. The thing should have been complete not some mish mosh of someone's else's idea of what an easel might be. Don't waste your time with this company and their cheaply made products. Google them and you will see their employment tactics are not any better either.

5My 3 year old grandaughter loves it!  Oct 30, 2009
We are very happy with this easel. It was easy to set up. My husband had to drill two holes for the cutting edge to line up, but that was all the trouble we had. Also, a minor issue that was resolved immediatly, the white dry erase board was a little bumpy and had a small scratch on it. A quick phone call to Amazon and the very next day I received a brand new easel with any extra parts that I needed. I just exchanged the white boards and repacked everything in the original box and put on the paid postage slip on the outside, then took it to the postoffice It was that easy.I am very pleased with the easel and the service of Amazon. I also bought all the extras to go with it.
