Great for a younger pirate! Sep 28, 2009 My 4 year old neighbor "Captain Patch" had his big 4th birthday party last weekend. The pirate chest was a big hit! Very sturdy and easy to open for him. I unwrapped it (shrink wrap) and added extra gold coins and some plastic gaudy rings. I used the coin pouch for some special chocolate coins. So I did add a bit to the treasure - but he loved it. I wouldn't recommend this for kids much older - it seems younger kids like to 'put things inside other things'.
very nice Jun 27, 2009 I bought this for my son's 5th birthday party. the party was at the beach with a pirate theme and I wanted to have a hunt for buried treasure. I filled it with really small coloring books for the kids and each took one once the treasure was found. You could fill it with coins and pearl/gold necklaces, or candy rings, too, but nothing big. It is not big, but if you use small items it will work nicely. The skull lock is a nice touch. so, although it is small, it is a nice looking chest and worked perfectly. really made for a fun activity that day and my son still uses it for playing. we've filled it with beads and coins from different parades and he takes it outside and hides it and than pretends to find it. He never plays with the items it came with (pirate flag, bag, eye patch), so if you are buying it for that, forget about it. you can get those things at a party store for a few dollars, but the chest is definitely a winner.
Cute chest to play with or bury Jun 26, 2009 I bought this pirate's chest to fill with "treasure" and bury at the beach for my kids to dig up.
I distressed it a little with a hammer, and it held up to gettting ding marks. Still looked good. No stain came off or exposed raw wood. one of the slats on the top loosened and came off, though, and I could see the construction was not too sturdy, but it was easy to glue back in place. The stuff that comes inside is so-so. Not authentic looking if you are trying to pass it off as a real treasure chest, but plenty of fun for a young child who just wants to play with it. The flag, eye patch and coins are a little cheesy. There is a large Melissa & Doug sticker on the bottom of the chest, FYI. The latch is cool-looking, with faux jewels on a skull in the eye sockets. Really cute toy for the young and pirate obsessed, and passable as a real treasure chest if you sub out the contents.
Pirate Chest... May 15, 2009 My very adult brother is very much into pirates, and he loved this gift. It is very durable. And- yes the 'hidden' area of the chest is easy to find, but this is intended for children, not as a safe for your retirement nest egg!
Pirate Chest Apr 28, 2009 This is great for girls & boys to play with. Comes with lots of extras for hours of pretend play. You get a pirate chest, eye patch, a flag, & a bag of coins so you can be a pirate.
